Paver Patio Installation That Stays Flat for Decades
Patios built on deep compacted bases that handle Oregon clay and winter rain. Serving Portland, Salem, Eugene, and Corvallis.
Paver Patios Built for Wet Oregon Ground
Walk through any older Portland neighborhood and you will see them: paver patios with sunken corners, wavy surfaces, and weeds pushing up through widening joints. None of that is the pavers' fault. It is what happens when a patio gets built on a thin base over our native clay soil, which turns soft every winter and shifts under anything sitting on it.
Our paver patio installation process is built around one idea: the base is the patio. The pavers are the surface you walk on, but the compacted gravel below them is what decides whether the patio is still flat in fifteen years. We dig deeper, compact more, and grade more carefully than the minimum, because in the Willamette Valley the minimum does not survive the rain.
A patio is also the anchor for everything else outside. Many of our customers pair a new patio with a broader hardscaping plan, fire pit, seat walls, walkways, or add landscape lighting so the space stays usable after the early Northwest sunsets.
Our Patio Installation Process, Step by Step
Every patio we build follows the same sequence. Skipping or shortcutting any of these steps is how patios fail, so we do not skip any of them.
1. Excavation
We dig out the topsoil and soft clay to a depth matched to your soil and the patio's use, deeper for driveways and heavy traffic, and haul the spoils away. Stopping at a few inches and building on organic soil is the most common shortcut we see in failed patios.
2. Compacted Gravel Base
Crushed rock goes in a few inches at a time, with each lift compacted by machine before the next one. Compacting in thin lifts is slower, but it is the only way to get a base that will not settle later. We also set the pitch here, so the finished patio sheds rain away from your house.
3. Sand Setting Bed and Pavers
A screeded layer of bedding sand goes over the base, then the pavers are laid in your chosen pattern and cut cleanly around curves, posts, and edges.
4. Edge Restraints and Polymeric Sand
Solid edge restraints lock the field of pavers in place so they cannot creep outward over time. Then we sweep polymeric sand into the joints and activate it with water. It hardens enough to keep weeds out and pavers tight, while still letting the surface flex through freeze-thaw cycles without cracking.
Paver Patio Design Options
Once the structure is right, the fun part is making it yours. Pavers come in a huge range of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures, from clean modern plank styles to tumbled cobble looks that fit older Craftsman homes. We bring samples to the estimate and lay them out in your yard so you can see real color in real Oregon light, which is very different from a showroom.
Popular choices in our area include:
- Large-format slabs for a clean, modern look
- Classic brick and cobble patterns for traditional homes
- Borders and banding in a contrasting color to frame the space
- Permeable pavers that let stormwater soak through, useful on lots with drainage rules
- Circle kits and inlays around fire pits
- Matching walkways that tie the patio to doors, gates, and driveways
Why Choose Our Patio Contractors
Bases Built for Clay Soil
We excavate deeper and compact in thin lifts because Willamette Valley clay punishes thin bases. Flat now, flat in fifteen years.
Proper Drainage Pitch
Every patio is graded to shed rain away from your foundation, so water never ponds on the surface or sneaks into the crawlspace.
Locked-In Edges
Edge restraints and polymeric sand keep the pavers tight, so joints stay clean and weeds stay out.
Honest Material Guidance
We tell you which pavers handle freeze-thaw and constant moisture, and which bargain options will not.
