Sod Installation for an Instant New Lawn
Skip the year of seeding, watering, and weed pulling. We remove the old lawn, fix the soil, and lay fresh sod. Serving Portland, Salem, Eugene, and Corvallis.
New Lawn Installation Without the Waiting
Seeding a lawn in Western Oregon means a year of babying: keeping seed damp through germination, fighting the weeds that sprout right alongside it, and roping off mud all winter. Sod skips most of that. The lawn arrives mature, weed-free, and ready to root, and within a few weeks you are walking on grass instead of staring at dirt.
Sod also solves problems seed cannot. A backyard that turns to mud every winter, a front lawn taken over by moss and weeds, or a new construction lot with no lawn at all can be a finished yard in a day or two of work. The catch is that sod only performs as well as what is underneath it, which is why most of our sod installation time goes into the ground, not the grass.
Once the new lawn is established, keeping it thick is the easy part. Our lawn care programs handle the fertilization and moss control that keep new sod from sliding back into the same problems the old lawn had.
How We Handle Laying Sod, Step by Step
A sod job that skips prep looks great for one season and then fails. Here is the process we follow on every yard:
Old Lawn Removal
We strip out the existing grass, weeds, and moss rather than laying sod over the top of them. Old turf left underneath breaks down unevenly, creates soft spots, and lets the same weeds push back through the new lawn.
Grading and Soil Preparation
Willamette Valley clay compacts hard and drains slowly, the two worst traits soil can have under a lawn. We loosen the ground, work in compost or fresh topsoil where it is needed, and grade so winter rain sheets away from the house instead of pooling in the lawn. A smooth, slightly firm finish grade is what keeps the new sod free of bumps and low spots.
Laying the Sod
Rolls go down the same day they are delivered, staggered like brickwork with seams pressed tight so they knit together invisibly. Edges get trimmed clean along beds and walkways, then the whole lawn is rolled to press roots against soil and watered deeply before we leave.
Watering and Establishment
The first three to four weeks decide everything. New sod needs the soil under it kept damp every day at first, then progressively deeper and less frequent watering as roots tie down. If your yard does not have irrigation, this is the time to add it; we coordinate timing with our sprinkler system installation crew so the lines go in before the sod, not through it.
When Sod Replacement Beats Repairing the Old Lawn
Not every rough lawn needs full turf installation. Thin lawns with decent soil often come back with aeration and overseeding. But replacement is usually the smarter move when:
- More than half the yard is weeds, moss, or bare ground
- The lawn sits on builder-compacted soil that grass has never rooted into
- Grading problems leave standing water that kills grass every winter
- You are tired of a patchwork lawn and want a uniform grass type
- A remodel, pool, or septic project tore up the yard
- You need a usable lawn this season, not a seeded one next year
Why Choose Us for Turf Installation
